Unwritten: Directors and Writers Application
Opportunity Alert: Call for Local Directors and Writers for our Artist Development Programme, Unwritten.
Are you a passionate director or writer looking to collaborate and create?
Join us for Unwritten as part of our Artist Development Programme, a unique showcase event with a twist.
This is your chance to exchange ideas, build relationships, and create something extraordinary.
Eight writers and eight directors will be selected and invited to come to our Unwritten: Creative Speed Dating evening at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 9 April, 7pm.
At the event writers will pitch to directors an idea for a 10-15 minute monologue or duologue in a three-minute, speed-dating-style format.
What You’ll Need:
- Writers: Pitch or bring an example of a monologue/duologue.
- Directors: Showcase your work through a portfolio or examples of past projects.
This programme is ideal for directors and writers with a strong commitment to new writing. While we can’t promise love at first sight, we can guarantee inspiring and fruitful connections between theatre-makers!

Programme Overview
Unwritten: Creative Speed Dating Evening
Wed 9 April 7pm – 9pm
at Theatre Royal Winchester
Writers and directors meet, pitch ideas, and form partnerships for the project.
Nibbles and drinks will be provided.
Unwritten: Scratch Night
Fri 13 June 7pm – 9pm
at Theatre Royal Winchester
Directors and writers will be given a 10–15 minute slot to share their monologue/duologue in our Atrium space at Theatre Royal Winchester.
One play will be chosen as the winner. Directors are asked to cast the performance.
Unwritten: Showcase
The winning piece from the scratch night will receive:
- Rehearsal space at Theatre Royal Winchester, from Tuesday 26 – Friday 29 August.
- Mentorship from our Playmakers team to develop the script into a polished 45-minute piece.
- The selected winners including the actors selected will have their travel expenses covered- Up to 4 artists
- A showcase performance followed by audience feedback on Friday 29 August at Theatre Royal Winchester in the Atrium.
Who we’re looking for
We welcome writers and directors from all experience levels, whether you're just starting out or an established artist, this is your chance to shine. Please only apply if you are available for all dates listed above.
